so I’m watching series 1 of Doctor Who for the first time.
I have to admit, it’s really not my favorite so far. Don’t get me wrong; I LOVE Nine. Love him to death. But the writing is just… not superb, imo. There is something I just need to flail over.
I love how far the Doctor’s come. I love how he began as this alien who looked at us like we were stupid apes, saw our potential, but didn’t really value human life. I love how dark he began (still is, but I’m getting to that). And now look at him. He doesn’t just see humanity’s potential anymore, he sees humanity AND it’s potential. He values the human race as a whole and as individuals. It’s incredible.
Now, I mentioned his darkness. I really love how, in series five and six, you just get these glimpses of it. It’s like having friends, having a family and loved ones has really lifted the burden over time. Nine hundred years of darkness is a lot to bear, but the ones he keeps close relieve some of that. But I also love how it is still there, and those moments that it manifests itself. This is a man who has committed genocide several times and will most-likely do it again; a man that some of the most powerful aliens in the universe were so afraid of that they decided to lock him up in Pandorica. And I think that, by showing us those moments when the darkness does take him, it really demonstrates just how far he’s come from where we first saw him in series one. And I really, really love that.
So overall verdict: series one writing isn’t incredible so far, but Chris! He’s amazing. I love him to death already and I’m only a few episodes in.
